How we choose what to cover

The Thursday email, Worth it?, settles one expensive Queenstown decision a week: a spring ski day, the gondola with kids, Milford by coach or plane, the bungy, a car or the bus. The order follows the season, so each week’s decision is the one people are actually making that week. A road closure, a big snowfall or a partner perk that fits the topic can change the order. None of them decides the verdict.

Every issue names the free or cheaper option, with its own time and distance. It is a real choice, never padding.

The website guides answer the questions a visit raises: getting around, the walks, the ski fields, what things cost, drive times and the seasons. Each guide shows when it was last checked, and seasonal numbers (ski dates, fares, opening hours) are re-checked before the season starts.

How we get the numbers

• Prices from the operator’s own page. Every price is quoted exactly as the operator publishes it, with the date we read it and a link to the page it came from beside it. A price from a booking partner is the price the partner returned to us on the date shown. Check the page before you book: prices and availability change.
• No source, no number. A figure we cannot source is cut, never estimated. In the email, a price without its source page and check date comes out before the issue is sent.
• Snow. Snow facts come from each ski field’s own report and pages: numbers, dates and statuses only, labelled unofficial. We do not reproduce the operators’ words or their webcam images.
• Weather. The forecast is credited “Weather data from MET Norway (met.no), CC BY 4.0”, with the time it was fetched.
• Roads. State highway events come from the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi feed (CC BY 4.0), with the time each event was updated. The Crown Range, the Glenorchy road and the ski roads are council roads with no live feed, so we say when we do not know.
• Buses. “Bus timetable data: Otago Regional Council, licensed under CC BY 4.0 (orc.govt.nz). Queenstown Pocket is not affiliated with or endorsed by Otago Regional Council, Orbus or Bee Card.” The fare is $2.50 with a Bee Card.
• Flights. The airport line is our own estimate of fog and wind risk, credited “Aerodrome observations and forecast via NOAA Aviation Weather Center (public domain); the NZQN forecast is issued by MetService. Estimate by Queenstown Pocket, not the airline’s decision.” It is not a prediction of any flight.
• Tracks. Track information comes from the Department of Conservation (CC BY 4.0), reproduced as published.
• Queues. Queue times come from people in the line reporting their wait in the app. We show the median, and nothing at all when there are too few reports.

In the email, each line about the weather, the roads and the airport carries its source and the time it was issued or fetched. We use no generated images.

How we earn

Queenstown Pocket is free, and so is the email. We earn in two ways, and both are labelled where they appear.

• Partner links. Some guides and some issues link to booking partners (Viator, Klook and DiscoverCars). If you book through one of those links we earn a commission from the partner. The link takes you to the partner’s own site at the partner’s own price; the commission comes out of their side. On the website every partner link carries the line “We earn a commission if you book through this link” right next to it. In the email the link is marked on the item itself. In the app, launching November 2026, a booking card reads “Book on Viator. We earn a commission.” and a link that earns us nothing reads “Book direct (no commission)”. Viator is a Tripadvisor company; Klook is a trademark of Klook Travel Technology Limited. We are not affiliated with either beyond the affiliate agreement, and neither has any say in what we write.
• Sponsored placements. Anything paid for is labelled “Sponsored” on the item itself. In the email that is at most one reader perk from an operator, checked to be real and to have capacity, and never an alcohol offer. From launch, local businesses will be able to pay for a labelled placement in the app. Editorial listings and guides are never paid for.

The verdict comes first. The verdict is written before any affiliate link is added, and the link never changes it. Where we earn on an option, the item says so. Where we earn nothing, the issue says that too. A sponsor cannot buy a better opinion.

The words are our own. Klook’s copy, photos and reviews are never reproduced, and the email carries a Viator link only once Viator has signed off its use in email in writing.

Independence

It is an independent guide. Queenstown Pocket is not affiliated with or endorsed by Queenstown Lakes District Council, Destination Queenstown, the Otago Regional Council, Orbus or Bee Card, NZSki, Cardrona or RealNZ. When we use their public data we say so and link to it.

Who writes it

The Thursday email is signed by Isaac, the founder. He writes the verdict in every issue, along with the opening, the workaround and the subject line. Code gathers the numbers from the data feeds and our listings and renders them into the draft: each price with its check date and source page, the forecast, the road events and the airport estimate. It holds the draft when the weather or roads feed is stale or missing, and it never writes the verdict. If a language model is used to tidy the connecting sentences, it is checked against the same numbers and never writes the verdict, the opening, the workaround or the subject line.

The website guides are published by Tally Sphere Limited as Queenstown Pocket and checked against primary sources. Each one names its sources and the date they were read.

If a number is wrong, email hello@queenstownpocket.com or reply to any Thursday email. We fix it and note the change on the page, and every correction is listed on the corrections page. A correction to the email runs in the next issue.

The email list is kept in our own database and sent through beehiiv. You can unsubscribe from any email in one click, and no reason is asked. The privacy policy explains what we collect and why.
