Is Shotover Jet worth it, or is the canyon enough from the trail
Shotover Jet's fares, ride time and departures against KJet and the Shotover Gorge Trail, from the operators', the Trails Trust's and DOC's own pages. Every number carries the page it came from and the date we read it.

In short: The decision is whether to pay Shotover Jet $199 an adult ($109 a child) for about 25 minutes on the river, or to watch the same canyon from the Shotover Gorge Trail for the bus fare. It turns on four things: whether you want to ride or to watch, how many of you are paying (the family pass is $507 for four), the river on the day, and whether the smallest rider clears 1 m. KJet, which leaves from the town pier, is $149 for 60 minutes. Prices as the operators published them on 18 September 2026.

Prices are copied exactly from each operator’s own page. None of the walk sources states a price, so the walk rows give none; the Gorge Trail row shows the bus fare, the only cost there we can put a source to. Orbus Route 4 has run from Jacks Point to Arrowtown through Queenstown and Arthurs Point, in both directions, since 30 June 2025 (ORC (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026), stopping at McChesney Rd, Atley Rd (Queenstown Top 10 Holiday Park) and Arthurs Point (Coronet Hotels) in ORC’s timetable feed. No source we found publishes the walk from a stop to the Shotover Jet entrance, so this page does not give one; the shuttle or the car is the published way in. Two more sums worth doing before you pay. For two adults, one child aged 5 to 15 and one under 5 who clears 1 m, Shotover Jet’s single fares come to 2 × $199 + $109 = $507, the same as the family pass. And a minute is not the whole comparison: Shotover Jet sells the canyons, which it says only it may enter, while KJet’s page does not say whether its hour goes into them.
The river on foot
The Shotover Gorge Trail runs 5.5 km one way from Arthurs Point to Tucker Beach (the Trust’s page header says 6 km, 1 to 1.5 hours by bike, 2 hours on foot), Grade 3 with short Grade 4 sections in the Hugo Tunnel stretch. The Trust’s easy option is Atley Road to the Hugo Tunnel: 1.6 km and 1 hour return on foot, 45 minutes by bike. From the far end of the tunnel, the Trust says, the jet boats can be seen at close quarters in the narrow canyon. Further along, Bucks Balcony and McQuilkin’s lookout look over the gorge; Bucks Balcony is past the Grade 4 Lyttles Ladder climb, and the Trust warns to be wary of the cliffs below McQuilkin’s. It also says not to swim in the gorge, because Shotover Jet operates there (Queenstown Trails Trust (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026).
By bus, take Route 4 to Atley Rd, about 340 m from the trailhead in a straight line (our measurement). Our walk data has no stop within walking distance of the Tucker Beach end, so plan the walk as an out-and-back. ORC gives Route 4 as about every 30 minutes from 6 to 9am and 3 to 7pm, and about hourly from 9am to 3pm and 7 to 10pm, and says the times are approximate (ORC Route 4 timetable (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026).
Two short DOC walks sit beside the same river. The Oxenbridge Tunnel Track is 20 minutes and 1 km return to a viewpoint over the Oxenbridge Tunnel river diversion and an old steam engine, starting on the left just before the Edith Cavell Bridge coming from Queenstown (DOC (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026). The Morningstar Track is 30 minutes and 2 km one way from the Morning Star Beach Recreation Reserve car park to a river beach opposite the Oxenbridge tunnel (DOC brochure (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026).
A note on the bridge. Shotover Jet’s location page calls “the shotover bridge on Arthurs Point Road” its viewing platform without naming the bridge. The one-lane Edith Cavell Bridge, which you cross from Queenstown to reach the Shotover Jet entrance (location page (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026), has its deck 27.4 m above the river, and Heritage New Zealand notes that the jet boats leave from just upstream of it (Heritage New Zealand, List 4371 (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026). We found no source for a footpath or a safe place to stand on it, so this page does not suggest it as a place to watch from.
What changes the answer
- The river on the day. Shotover Jet runs every day of the year except Christmas Day, weather permitting, and trips may be postponed or cancelled in heavy rain or flooding. If it cancels or postpones for river or weather conditions, direct bookers get a full refund or a free reschedule; a booking made through a third party follows that platform’s terms (FAQs (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026). On Friday 18 September 2026 its home page said it was open with a minimum height of 1.0 m for the day, said the river was bumpier than usual and asked riders with back or neck problems to talk to staff (home page (opens in a new tab)). That line changes daily, so read it on the morning.
- Rain on the trail. The Trust says the Hugo Tunnel may be closed after heavy rain or in floods, with the Hugo Tunnel Bypass to use instead. On 18 September its alert bar carried a network-wide heavy-rain warning and listed the Lower Shotover Conservation Area as flooded, with no closure on the Shotover Gorge Trail (Trust alert bar (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026).
- Height and age. Shotover Jet has no minimum age but a 1 m minimum height, which can rise to 1.2 m when weather and river conditions require. Under-5s ride free if they clear 1 m and travel in the same boat as a fare-paying adult 16 or over; under-10s must ride with a fare-paying adult 16 or over; 10 to 15 year olds may ride without one, but a parent or guardian 16 or over must be at the river base (FAQs (opens in a new tab)). KJet has no height restriction: children must fit a KJet life jacket and ride with an adult, and infants 2 to 4 ride free on a parent’s or caregiver’s knee, one adult for every infant (KJet (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026). So a child under 1 m who fits a KJet life jacket can ride KJet but not Shotover Jet.
- The queue. Shotover Jet leaves every 30 minutes from 9.30am to 4pm, and KJet every hour on the hour. Shotover Jet asks self-drivers to check in at the river base 30 minutes before the trip, and shuttle riders at the desk inside the Station Building 45 minutes before (departure times (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026). We have no queue figures for Shotover Jet we can stand behind yet, so this page gives no wait time.
- The season. Shotover Jet says its published prices are valid for travel up to 30 September 2027 (prices (opens in a new tab)). On 18 September KJet’s page carried a promotion, $30 off jet boat rides with the code PLAYLOUD and a “From $119” button, with no end date or terms stated, so the table uses the standard fare (KJet (opens in a new tab)). For the walk, Route 4 runs about hourly from 9am to 3pm, so a midday trip is worth timing against the timetable.
How to book
Shotover Jet’s FAQ says it is not cheaper to book through Viator, Bookme or GrabOne: the price is the same wherever you book. On 18 September 2026 Viator returned from NZ$204.11 for its Shotover Jet listing, NZ$5.11 more than the operator's own $199 adult fare (our arithmetic); we do not know why the two differ. Booking direct also keeps the operator’s own refund or free reschedule if it cancels for the river or the weather.
