Is Skyline Queenstown worth it with kids, or should you walk up
The decision: pay for Skyline's gondola and luge with children, or walk the free Tiki Trail to the same complex. The answer depends on whether they want the luge, how old and tall they are, whether they can climb 2 km, and which day you go.

In short: The Tiki Trail up is free, 2 km and about an hour one way by DOC’s figure. The gondola alone is $69 adult and $48 child, or $187 for two adults and two children; with 3 luge rides each it is $99, $68 and $264. Walking up saves the gondola fare but does not buy the luge: none of Skyline’s pages we read says a walker can buy rides at the top, or at what price. What the luge adds to a gondola ticket (our arithmetic: package price less the gondola-only price): for an adult, 3 rides add $30 ($99 less $69), 5 rides $35, 6 rides $37 and unlimited $71; for a child, $20 ($68 less $48), $24, $26 and $48. The 15-minute average ride is Skyline’s figure from its luge pricing page; the luge times in the table are that figure multiplied out, before any wait.
The gondola base is at the top of Brecon Street. From elsewhere in the basin, the bus page has the routes and stops; the fare is $2.50 with a Bee Card.

The family make-up is from Skyline’s terms and conditions (opens in a new tab): two adults with one, two or three children. Skyline labels the 3 and 5-ride family bundles “each” but the 6-ride bundle only “6 Luge Rides”, so ask at booking whether that means 6 each.
Against single tickets, for two adults and two children (our arithmetic): the gondola-only pass is $187 against $234 (2 × $69 + 2 × $48), $47 less; the 3-rides-each pass is $264 against $334 (2 × $99 + 2 × $68), $70 less. Walking up instead of the gondola-only pass keeps that family’s $187. It does not replace a luge package, for the reason in the answer above.
The walk up: the Tiki Trail
- DOC’s figures: 1 hour and 2 km one way, from the gondola base on Brecon Street to the gondola top terminal, graded an easy to intermediate walking track (DOC day walks brochure (March 2025) (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026).
- Skyline’s figures: a moderate to advanced track with 400 m or more of climb, about 1 to 1.5 hours from the gondola base to the Skyline complex (Skyline FAQs (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026). With children, the slower figure is the safer one to plan around.
- How steep: at least 400 m up over 2 km averages at least 1 m of climb for every 5 m walked (our arithmetic: Skyline’s 400 m ÷ DOC’s 2,000 m = 20 percent).
- Bikes: DOC warns that steep downhill mountain bike tracks cross the walking track and are unsafe for walkers because of the riders’ speed (DOC Ben Lomond Track page (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026). Bikes are not allowed on the trail itself; dogs are, on a lead (DOC day walks brochure (March 2025) (opens in a new tab) symbols).
- No road up: Skyline’s access road is for commercial vehicles only, so the gondola and the Tiki Trail are the only two ways to the complex (Skyline FAQs (opens in a new tab), read 18 Sep 2026).
- Down again: the same trail on foot, or a one-way gondola ticket down, which DOC says walkers can buy (DOC Ben Lomond Track page (opens in a new tab)) and Skyline’s public pricing pages do not price.

- Tandem riding is for adults with small children only (luge page (opens in a new tab)), and the $5 is for tandem rides as the luge pricing page (opens in a new tab) words it; it does not say per ride.
- The track is 1,600 m (luge page (opens in a new tab)) and an average ride takes 15 minutes (luge pricing page (opens in a new tab)).
- A luge ticket carries a 30-minute session for the first ride, and the rest must be used the same day. Skyline asks you to be at the base gondola terminal at least 45 minutes before the session (Skyline FAQs (opens in a new tab)).
- Extra rides are sold at the top, at the Stratosfare reception, the gift shop and the Luge shack (Skyline FAQs (opens in a new tab)). Skyline publishes no price for them and does not say whether someone who walked up can buy them.
- Skyline lists a pre-schooler band (2 to 5) and, in its terms, a senior ticket type (65 and over), but its pricing pages show a price for neither.

On Skyline’s hours page (opens in a new tab) the gondola closing time is the last time you can board going up, allowing an hour at the top, and the luge closing time is the latest start of the last run. Skyline gives no reason for the short Saturday on 26 September. Hours change week to week, so read the page for your day.
What changes the answer
- Whether they want the luge. Both ways up end at the same complex. The walk saves the gondola fare; it does not come with a luge ride, and Skyline does not say a walker can buy one.
- Age and height. Under 2, no luge. From 2 and over 85 cm, tandem with an adult. Alone from 6 and 110 cm.
- Legs. 2 km one way with 400 m or more of climb; DOC says 1 hour, Skyline says 1 to 1.5 hours.
- The day. The luge was closed on Wednesday 16 September, and on Saturday 26 September the gondola runs 9:00am to 3:00pm and the luge 9:30am to 3:00pm.
- The season. Unlimited luge is not sold during peak holiday periods, and Skyline gives no dates for them.
- Weather. The Tiki Trail page notes that the steep track under trees can be slippery when wet or frozen. Check the forecast and that page’s status line on the morning you go.
- The queue. This page gives no queue time. What Skyline does publish is the luge session: arrive at the base 45 minutes before it, first ride within its 30 minutes.

Can you walk up the Tiki Trail and take the gondola down?
DOC says walkers can pay for a one-way gondola ticket downhill. Skyline's public pricing pages show no one-way price, so check it with Skyline before relying on it, and note that the gondola closing time on Skyline's hours page is the last boarding up.
Is unlimited luge sold in the school holidays?
Skyline says unlimited luge is unavailable during peak holiday periods and publishes no dates for them, so whether a given school holiday counts is not stated. Check the package list when you book.
