Queenstown when it rains: what is actually worth doing
Rain here comes as fronts that pass, not as a season. What to do while one passes, reachable by bus, with the prices the operators publish.

In short: Go to Arrowtown for the Lakes District Museum ($14, daily 9 to 5) and the Chinese Settlement, or stay in town for Kiwi Park (9:30 to 5), the cinema and the library. Book the hot pools if the budget allows. Skip the summit walks in low cloud and take a bush walk instead; the front usually clears in hours.

Orbus fares are $2.50 with a Bee Card ($4 cash) and transfers are free within 45 minutes; the bus guide has every route. Where an operator does not publish a price on its own site, the table says so rather than guessing.

How long the rain lasts
NIWA’s normals put Queenstown at 721 mm a year, between 49 and 75 mm in every month: no wet season, no dry season, just fronts. The pattern most days is a band of rain from the west, a few hours of it, then clearing skies and the mountains rinsed white. Plan the indoor thing for the morning and keep the afternoon free; the month-by-month guide has the figures.
With children
- Library first. Free, warm, on Stanley Street where Routes 1, 4 and 5 stop, with a children’s area. The under-rated move.
- Kiwi Park for the conservation show and the kiwi house; the whole visit is a couple of hours.
- Arrowtown makes a half day: the museum’s family ticket is $30, the Chinese Settlement is free, and the bus ride is part of the outing.
