Queenstown for Australians: the practical answers
Three quarters of Queenstown's international visitors are Australian, and the questions repeat: visa, licence, Medicare, GST. The answers, from the official pages, in one place.

In short: Australian citizens need no visa and no NZeTA, just the New Zealand Traveller Declaration. Your licence is valid for 18 months (12 from 1 November 2026). Public hospital care is covered by the reciprocal agreement and accidents by ACC, but not GP visits or ambulances. GST of 15 percent is already in the price, and four airlines fly direct from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Arriving
Complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration online before you fly; it replaces the paper arrival card. Biosecurity is strict: declare food, outdoor gear and hiking boots (clean them), and expect the walking shoes to be inspected if you are here for the tracks. Driving, if you rent
- Your Australian licence works as it is: up to 18 months from your last arrival now, 12 months from 1 November 2026. Carry it.
- The road rules are close to home, with a few local habits: give way rules at uncontrolled intersections, one-lane bridges with priority signs, and speed limits that are enforced by camera and by the winding roads themselves.
- In winter the ski access roads require chains when signposted; rental firms hire them. The car guide is honest about whether you need one at all.
Health and insurance
The reciprocal health care agreement means an Australian on a temporary visit gets immediately necessary treatment in a New Zealand public hospital, maternity care and subsidised pharmaceuticals on the same basis as a resident. It does not pay for GP appointments, ambulance transport, or the full cost of medicines a GP prescribes. ACC covers injuries from accidents, for anyone, while they are in New Zealand, including the ones that happen on a ski field or a bungy platform; it does not cover illness or costs after you fly home. Most Australians still carry travel insurance for the gaps, the cancellation risk, and the gear.
Money
New Zealand dollars, with the exchange rate hovering close to parity in recent years, so Australians do not get the discount they enjoy in Bali. GST is 15 percent and included in every displayed price. Cards work everywhere; tipping is not expected and is never added to a bill. Queenstown is New Zealand’s most expensive town for accommodation and activities; the free things to do and the $2.50 bus are the counterweight.
