Do you need a car in Queenstown?
The honest answer depends on one thing: whether you are leaving the Whakatipu basin. Here is where the $2.50 bus gets you, where it does not, and what the alternatives cost.

In short: No for Queenstown, Frankton, the airport, Arrowtown and the lakeside suburbs: Orbus covers them for $2.50 a ride with a Bee Card and central parking is scarce. Yes if you want Glenorchy, Wanaka or the ski roads on your own timetable, because no public bus goes there. For Milford Sound, a tour beats driving four and a half hours each way for most people.

Glenorchy: the road Orbus does not run
The Glenorchy road is 46 km of lake-edge driving from Queenstown, about 45 minutes, with no public bus and patchy phone coverage past Bob’s Cove. It is the one place where a rental car pays for itself in a single day: Bob’s Cove, Twelve Mile Delta, Bennett’s Bluff and the head of the lake are all pull-offs on the way. Milford Sound: tour, fly, or drive?
Milford Sound is about 288 km from Queenstown and around four and a half hours each way by road, with the Homer Tunnel and avalanche-season closures in winter. Self-driving is a 10-hour day before the cruise. That is why most visitors take a coach tour with the cruise included (around 13 hours door to door) or fly-cruise-fly in under 5 hours. If you do rent: what to know
- Book ahead for July, August and late December. Queenstown’s fleet sells out in ski season and over Christmas, and prices climb as it does.
- Chains in winter. The Coronet Peak and Remarkables access roads require chains to be carried when signposted; rental firms hire them, and the ski areas run paid mountain buses if you would rather not.
- Parking in town is the cost nobody budgets for. Council-managed spaces are free from 6pm to 8am and on public holidays; daytime is paid and enforced. The local move is to park at Frankton and ride Route 1 in.
- Comparison sites show the airport desks and the local firms together, which is where the Queenstown bargains usually are.
