Queenstown to Glenorchy: road, stops and what works offline
Forty-six kilometres along the edge of Lake Wakatipu, one road in, no bus, and coverage that comes and goes. Here is how to do it well.

In short: Glenorchy is 46 km and 45 minutes to an hour from Queenstown on a sealed, winding lakeside road with no public bus. Rent a car or take a scenic tour; stop at Bob’s Cove (14 km) for the walk and Bennetts Bluff (about 25 km) for the view; and download the map first, because the coverage drops out along the lake.

Getting there: car, tour or shuttle
Car. The drive is the point. Allow half a day with the stops and fill up in Queenstown; Glenorchy is a village, not a service town. Track bus. In the Great Walks season (November to April) Info & Track runs scheduled buses from 37 Shotover Street to Glenorchy at 8:00am and 11:15am, back from Glenorchy at 10:15am and 3:00pm, listed at $49 adult and $35 child one way with a 10 percent adjustment added at checkout; an $85 same-day return package is offered. Bookings are essential and the service needs two passengers to run. Outside the season it is private charter only, from $255 one way. It is a tramper’s bus, not a public one, but it is the only scheduled seat on this road without a tour.
What works offline
- Maps. Download before you leave town. Queenstown Pocket keeps the whole Whakatipu basin, this road included, on the phone.
- Track times. Bob’s Cove is 20 minutes to the cove and 30 to Picnic Point, one way; the Mt Crichton loop is 6.4 km and 2 to 3 hours. Both start from signed DOC car parks, and both have a full page under Walks.
- Weather. The head of the lake makes its own. Check the forecast in Queenstown, not at the wharf.
- Beyond Glenorchy the roads to Paradise and the Rees and Dart valleys are gravel with fords that rise after rain. Rental agreements often exclude them; read yours.

46 km by the Glenorchy-Queenstown Road, the only road there. The Glenorchy community's own figure is 45 minutes to an hour without stops; with the viewpoints it is a comfortable half day.
Is there a bus from Queenstown to Glenorchy?
No public bus; Orbus ends at Sunshine Bay, 3 km out of town.
