Milford Sound is a long way from Queenstown, and every brochure hides that. Here are the real hours, the real prices, and the road rules that decide which option fits.

Coach tours: the default for good reason
The coach is how most visitors do it: leave Queenstown around 7am, stop at Te Anau and the Mirror Lakes, cruise the fiord in the middle of the day, and get back into Queenstown in the evening. It is a long day, but nobody in your group drives 600 km, and the commentary covers the Eglinton valley and the Homer Tunnel. Two well-reviewed small-group versions:

Fly-cruise-fly: the short version
Under five hours all up, with the Southern Alps under the wing both ways and the cruise in between. It costs roughly twice the coach and it is weather dependent: flights are cancelled or moved when Milford clouds in, which it does often, so book it early in your stay to leave room for a second attempt.

Driving it yourself: the Milford Road rules
Queenstown to Milford is 288 km via Te Anau. DOC’s own advice is to treat the return trip as a 600 km, 12 to 14 hour day, and to allow more in winter. The road is spectacular and mostly straightforward, with a short list of things that catch people out:
- No fuel after Te Anau. There are no shops or fuel stations between Te Anau and Milford Sound. Fill up in Te Anau, 120 km from Milford.
- The Homer Tunnel is 1.2 km long at 945 m, single lane in effect, with traffic lights in summer peak periods and waits of up to 20 minutes.
- Winter closures. Avalanche control closes the road between the Hollyford junction and The Chasm at short notice, usually mornings, usually reopening by late morning; DOC suggests leaving Te Anau from 9am onward in winter. Chains may be required May to September and can be hired in Te Anau.
- Coverage and toilets. Limited mobile coverage outside Te Anau; public toilets only at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford.
- Cruise tickets are bought separately when you drive; book a sailing time that leaves margin for the tunnel lights.

The middle path: a night in Te Anau
Te Anau is two hours from Queenstown and two from Milford. Sleeping there turns a 14-hour dash into two relaxed days, gets you to the fiord before the coaches, and puts the Kepler track and the glowworm caves within reach. It is the option locals recommend to friends with a car and a spare night.
