Queenstown to Wanaka: the two roads and the buses
An hour over the Crown Range, or a little longer through Cromwell. Two bus operators, one chain rule, and the reasons to pick each road.

In short: Crown Range Road is about an hour, State Highway 6 through Cromwell about 1 hour 15 minutes. SkyDrive shuttles run four times a day from Athol Street and the airport, InterCity once a day (about 1 h 45). In winter, fit chains when the sign says so; ignoring it can cost $750 from 2026.

The two roads

The Crown Range climbs out of the Wakatipu basin through the zigzags above Arrowtown, tops out on the range and drops past the Cardrona Hotel and the ski road into the Cardrona valley. It is sealed and open all year, and it is the road to take on a clear day. The Cromwell road follows the Kawarau River through the gorge, past the bungy bridge, and turns north at Cromwell along Lake Dunstan; longer, lower, gentler. SkyDrive is the one with the airport stop and the Cardrona stop, which makes it the ski shuttle as well as the town link; its timetable and fares live in the booking portal rather than on a static page, so check the day. Neither bus is part of Orbus; the $2.50 network ends at Arrowtown and Jacks Point.
Winter and the chain rule
- When to fit chains. Only when snow is settling on the road, a “chains required” variable message sign is showing, or Police, ski field operators or QLDC tell you to.
- The fine. From winter 2026, $750 under the Traffic and Parking Bylaw 2025 for not fitting chains in snowy or icy conditions on council roads.
- Grit and de-icer. The council grits for traction and applies a calcium magnesium acetate de-icer that works down to about minus 7 degrees on the road surface; below that, expect ice.
- Rental terms. Many rental agreements exclude the Crown Range in winter or altogether. Read yours before you turn off at Arrowtown.

How long does it take to drive from Queenstown to Wanaka?
About an hour over the Crown Range Road, or about 1 hour 15 minutes on State Highway 6 through Cromwell, by Lake Wanaka Tourism's figures. Add time in winter, and take the Cromwell road when the Crown Range is icy or you are towing.
Is there a bus from Queenstown to Wanaka?
Yes, two operators. Crown Range for the view and the time saving in good conditions; Cromwell for winter mornings, bad weather, campervans and trailers, and if you want to stop at the Kawarau Gorge and Cromwell's fruit stalls.
Can I do Wanaka as a day trip from Queenstown without a car?
Yes. SkyDrive's four daily shuttles make a return day trip workable, with the airport and Frankton as pick-up points as well as the town centre. Check the day's times in the booking portal before relying on the last service back.
