Where to stay in Queenstown by bus stop
Queenstown is small but spread along a lake, and where you sleep decides how much of your trip is spent on a bus. Each area, with the route that serves it and how far it really is.

In short: Without a car, stay on Route 1: the town centre for walking to everything, Fernhill for quieter lakeside nights ten minutes out, or Frankton for price, supermarkets, the airport and every bus route in one place. Kelvin Heights, Lake Hayes Estate and Arrowtown all work by bus with one change at Frankton Hub.

Fares are $2.50 per adult with a Bee Card ($4 cash, $10 cash on the airport leg) and transfers are free within 45 minutes. Route details, spans and stop lists are on the bus routes pages.
Picking, honestly
- Two or three nights, first visit: the town centre. You will walk to dinner, the gondola and the lakefront, and the premium buys you time.
- A week, or a family with a supermarket run in it: Frankton. Bigger apartments, the shops, the airport a short hop, and Route 1 into town whenever you want it.
- Quiet and lake views on a budget: Fernhill, then check how far the property is uphill from the Route 1 stop before you book.
- Autumn, or a slower trip: Arrowtown, with Route 4 for the day trips into town and a taxi budget for late nights.

Getting home at night
Route 1 runs until about 12:25am on weekdays, which covers town-centre dinners for Fernhill and Frankton guests. Routes 2 to 5 finish between 10pm and 10:25pm, so Kelvin Heights, Lake Hayes Estate and Arrowtown need an earlier last bus or a taxi. Weekend timetables are slightly reduced; check the live board after 9pm. The bus routes and fares guide has the full network.

Where should I stay in Queenstown without a car?
Anywhere on Orbus Route 1: the town centre, Fernhill or Frankton. Route 1 links all three to the airport every 15 minutes or so for $2.50 with a Bee Card, and Frankton Hub connects to every other route with a free transfer within 45 minutes.
Is it better to stay in Queenstown or Frankton?
Town for atmosphere and walking to dinner; Frankton for price, supermarkets, the airport and every bus route in one place. Frankton Hub to Stanley Street is 9 to 12 minutes on Route 1 by the ORC timetable (13 to 16 the other way), and Route 1 runs until after midnight on weekdays.
Is Fernhill a good place to stay in Queenstown?
Yes if you want lake views and quiet nights within a short bus ride of town. Route 1 runs through Fernhill to Sunshine Bay; expect 10 to 14 minutes to the Stanley Street hub by the ORC timetable and a steep walk from some properties to the stop.
Can you stay in Arrowtown and visit Queenstown by bus?
Yes. Route 4 runs direct from Arrowtown (Ramshaw Lane) by Arthurs Point to Stanley Street in Queenstown centre in 24 to 30 minutes by the ORC timetable, and Route 2 reaches Frankton Hub and the airport connection, both $2.50 with a Bee Card. The last bus from town to Arrowtown is Route 4 at 10:30pm, so late dinners in Queenstown need a taxi.
How far is the airport from the Queenstown town centre?
About 8 km. Route 1 takes 16 to 21 minutes to the Stanley Street hub by the ORC timetable for $2.50 with a Bee Card, a taxi 15 to 25 minutes for NZ$50 to $85 by the airport's own estimate.
