Parking in Queenstown town centre: what each street costs
The council publishes its hourly rates once a year in the Annual Plan. Here is the adopted 2026/27 schedule, street by street, with the free hours and the cheaper ways in.

In short: Central streets are $7 an hour, the Church Street carpark $8, the ring a few minutes out $4, and the Lakeview carpark $2.50. Every council space is free 6pm to 8am and on public holidays. For a day in town, park at your accommodation and take the $2.50 bus.

The council’s stated method is to price the most central spaces highest to keep about 80 percent occupancy and turnover; the 2026/27 changes are a 50-cent CPI round-up on most areas, $1.50 at Church Street, and a new paid area on Hay Street. Council-owned carparks stay in council hands. Rates are per hour; time limits and the residents’ zones are on the signs and the council’s online parking map.
When it is free
- 6pm to 8am, every day, in all council-managed spaces in Queenstown.
- All public holidays.
- Summer overflow from 20 December: temporary parking at the Kiwi Birdlife Park (to 8 February) and on Stanley Street, per the council’s summer map.
Or do not park at all
A day in the centre costs $56 at $7 an hour for eight hours; the Orbus network is $2.50 with a Bee Card each way from anywhere on Frankton Road, Fernhill or Kelvin Heights, and the where-to-stay guide maps the beds with a stop outside. How much is parking in Queenstown town centre?
Council rates for 2026/27 are $7 an hour on the central streets (Athol, Ballarat, Brecon, Camp, Earl, Marine Parade and Stanley), $8 an hour at the Church Street carpark, $4 an hour a few minutes further out (Boundary Street, Coronation Drive, Hay Street, Memorial Street, Park Street and the Recreation Ground), and $2.50 an hour at the Lakeview carpark up Thompson Street.
Is there free parking in Queenstown?
All council-managed spaces in Queenstown are free from 6pm until 8am the next morning and all day on public holidays. During the day the cheapest council option is the Lakeview carpark at $2.50 an hour; residential streets within walking distance are unmetered but watch the time limits and residents' zones.
How do I pay for parking in Queenstown?
Council spaces take the PayMyPark app as well as the meters; parking fines can be paid online, in person at the Gorge Road office, or by direct credit. Infringement fees for council-operated parking rose on 1 October 2024.
Where is the cheapest place to park in Queenstown?
The Lakeview carpark at $2.50 an hour, then the $4 areas (Boundary Street, Coronation Drive, Hay Street, Memorial Street, Park Street, Recreation Ground). Park at your accommodation and take Orbus for $2.50 a ride if you can; the airport's Park & Ride is $10 a day if you are flying out.
Where do I park in Queenstown at Christmas?
Summer overflow parking opens from 20 December: temporary parking at the Kiwi Birdlife Park (Saturday 20 December to Sunday 8 February) and Stanley Street (from 20 December), per the council. Evenings and public holidays stay free.
