Queenstown Marathon weekend, 14 November 2026: what to know
The biggest weekend on the spring calendar, for runners and for everyone trying to get across town. The distances, the shuttles, and how the day works.

In short: The 2026 Queenstown Marathon is on Saturday 14 November: 42 km, 21 km, 10 km and a 2.2 km kids run, all but the kids run finishing at the Queenstown Memorial Centre. Runners reach the starts on organiser shuttles ($20 marathon and half, $14 for the 10 km); everyone else should expect closed roads along the lake and a full town until early afternoon.

Bag collection at the finish opens at 9:00am for the 10 km, 10:00am for the half and 11:00am for the marathon, and everything must be collected by 4:30pm. Shuttle spaces are limited; the organiser asks you to book early and be at the pickup 15 minutes before your time.
Getting around town on the day
- Walk. The finish is in the town centre; nothing in the centre is worth driving to that morning.
- Buses. Orbus runs, with detours around closures published on the council’s detours page the week before. Route 1 to the airport is the one to check; allow an extra half hour for a flight.
- Driving. The course follows the lake and the Frankton Track corridor into town, so the Frankton road and the lakefront streets are where the closures bite. The road closure advisory and live map are published closer to the date; this page links them when they appear.
- Spectating. The lakefront and the Gardens end of the course are the easy spots on foot; the Memorial Centre finish is the atmosphere.
The rest of the weekend
Mid November is also the sweet spot in the calendar: the ski fields have just closed, the walking tracks are open, evenings run past 8:30pm, and NIWA’s normals put November at 11.9 C mean with 218 sunshine hours. Saturday 14 November 2026, with the marathon, half marathon and 10 km in the morning and the 2.2 km kids run at 1pm from the Queenstown Gardens. All the longer distances finish at the Queenstown Memorial Centre in the town centre.
How do runners get to the start?
Organiser shuttles from the event hub at the Queenstown Recreation Ground: marathon pickups 7:10am to 7:50am from the Boundary Street car park or Wakatipu High School ($20), half marathon 6:10am to 7:10am from Robins Road or Wakatipu High School ($20), 10 km 6:00am to 6:35am from Memorial Street ($14). Spaces are limited and you must arrive 15 minutes early.
Will the roads be closed on Marathon day?
Yes, along the course, which follows the lake and the Queenstown Trail into town. The organiser publishes a road closure advisory and a live closure map closer to the date; this page will be updated when they are released. Expect delays on the Frankton road and in the town centre until early afternoon.
Do the Orbus buses run on Marathon day?
The Otago Regional Council publishes bus detours for major events on its Orbus detours page. Check it the week before; the airport bus (Route 1) is the one most likely to be re-routed around the town-centre finish.
How busy is Queenstown on Marathon weekend?
At capacity. The event has drawn more than 13,000 registered runners and walkers in past years, plus supporters, so accommodation, restaurants and the airport bus are all full. Book everything, walk where you can, and allow extra time.
