Queenstown on a budget: what the cheap version of each day costs
Not a list of hostels. The eight swaps that take real money out of a Queenstown trip, with the published prices on both sides, and a $5 day from the town centre.

In short: The money goes on the car, the bed and the big-ticket activities. Leave the car (the bus is $2.50, central parking $7 an hour, the airport taxi $50 to $85), walk the free hills (Queenstown Hill and the Tiki Trail), shop in Frankton, and treat the gondola, the jet boat and the bungy as the one or two things you came for rather than the daily plan.

A day in Queenstown for $5
- Morning. Queenstown Hill from Belfast Terrace, 2 to 3 hours return, 500 m of climb, the whole basin from the top. Free.
- Lunch. Supplies from Four Square on Shotover Street (7am to 10pm) eaten on the Gardens foreshore. Free seat, best view in town.
- Afternoon. Route 1 to Frankton Hub, $2.50, then the Frankton Track back along the lake to the Gardens (8.5 km, mostly flat gravel, 1.5 to 2 hours; through 2026 pipeline works send walkers along the Frankton Road footpath for part of it). Or the same $2.50 to Sunshine Bay for the beach.
- Evening. Free disc golf in the Gardens, the lakefront at dusk, the library on Stanley Street if it rains. $2.50 home on Route 1 if you are staying out of the centre.

Food
The four supermarkets (Four Square in the centre; Woolworths, New World and Pak’nSave in Frankton) are all open 7am to 10pm and the Frankton three are a $2.50 Route 1 or Route 3 ride from the centre; the supermarkets guide has the stops. Most hostels and holiday parks have kitchens. Fergburger lists 7am to 2:30am every day on its own site (read 18 Sep 2026) and the Night ’n Day stores are 24 hours. We do not print restaurant or accommodation prices because they change by the night; book the bed early for July and the Christmas fortnight, when the town sells out.

Is Queenstown expensive?
The beds and the big activities are; getting around and the outdoors are not. Every Orbus ride is $2.50 with a Bee Card, the walks and the Gardens are free, the museum is $14, and the supermarkets in Frankton are a $2.50 ride away. The gondola is $69 but the Tiki Trail up the same hill is free.
How can I save money in Queenstown?
Skip the rental car (the airport bus is $2.50 against a $50 to $85 taxi, and central parking is $7 an hour), buy a $5 Bee Card, shop at Remarkables Park or Five Mile rather than in the centre, walk up the Tiki Trail instead of riding the gondola, and take the $2.50 bus to Arrowtown instead of a tour.
What is free to do in Queenstown?
Queenstown Hill, the Tiki Trail, the Frankton Track, the Lake Hayes loop, the Gardens and its disc golf course, the beaches, Arrowtown's Chinese Settlement and gold-rush street, the library, and the evening lakefront. The free-things guide lists them with the bus to each.
How much is the bus in Queenstown?
$2.50 a ride with a Bee Card on every route including the airport ($4 cash, $10 cash on the airport leg). The card is $5 with a $5 minimum top-up, transfers are free within 45 minutes, and children 5 to 18 pay $1.50.
Is it cheaper to stay in Frankton than in Queenstown?
Often, and Frankton is on Routes 1, 2, 3 and 5 with the supermarkets and the airport a few minutes away; the where-to-stay guide maps the beds by bus stop. We do not publish accommodation prices because they change nightly.
