What a day in Queenstown costs: three days, priced line by line
Three real days, costed line by line from the operators', the council's and our partners' own prices, each with the date it was read. The bed is not included, and neither is a guess at meals.

In short: Bed and meals aside, a day in Queenstown costs NZ$5 if you walk and ride the bus ($2.50 a ride with a Bee Card), from NZ$133 with the Skyline Gondola and Kiwi Park, and from NZ$369 for a Milford Sound coach tour with the cruise, or from NZ$373.11 for Shotover Jet and a Walter Peak lunch cruise. Every line below carries its source and the date it was read.
Each day starts and ends in the town centre and is priced for one person. Beds are out of scope because nightly rates move too fast to print; the where to stay by bus stop guide maps the areas instead. Sleeping outside the centre adds two Bee Card rides, $5, to any day. Partner prices are marked “from”, exactly as Viator and Klook return them, and we earn a commission if you book through the partner cards; the operator and council prices earn us nothing.

Queenstown Hill is about 500 m of climb to a view over the whole basin; Arrowtown’s Chinese Settlement is DOC’s restored 1880s miners’ huts, outdoors and free at any hour. The free things guide has twelve more to swap in, each with its bus.

Food, and what is left out
This guide does not estimate a day’s meals, and none of the totals above includes food beyond what the Walter Peak cruise’s own title names. One venue’s menu, read on its own site on 23 September 2026: at Fergburger on Shotover Street, The Fergburger is $17.20 and fries with sauce $8.50; the Ferg Pie at Fergbaker is $8.50. We have not yet read a Queenstown supermarket’s own online prices, so there is no grocery figure here; the supermarkets guide has the four stores, their hours and the bus to each.
How to cut it
- Buy the Bee Card before the airport ride. $2.50 with the card against $10 in cash on that leg, so the $5 card pays for itself on the first ride.
- Chain the rides. A second bus within 45 minutes of tagging off is free with the card.
- Walk up instead of riding. The Tiki Trail to Bob’s Peak is free and about an hour, against $69 for the gondola.
- Leave the car. $56 for eight central hours against $5 on the bus; if you do drive, council spaces are free from 6pm to 8am and on public holidays.
- Put a free day between the paid ones. The free day above is NZ$5.

How much is the bus in Queenstown?
$2.50 a ride with a Bee Card on every bus route, $4 cash, and $10 cash on the airport leg; the Route 6 ferry is $10 with the card. The card costs $5 with a $5 minimum top-up, and a second bus within 45 minutes of tagging off is free. Fares from the ORC fares page as read on 16 September 2026.
How much does it cost to park in Queenstown for a day?
Council rates for 2026/27 are $7 an hour on the central streets, so eight hours is $56; the Church Street carpark is $8 an hour, the streets a few minutes out $4, and the Lakeview carpark $2.50. Every council space is free from 6pm to 8am and on public holidays. Rates from QLDC's adopted Annual Plan, read 5 September 2026.
How much is a Milford Sound day trip from Queenstown?
A coach tour with the cruise starts from NZ$369 per person (13 h); fly-cruise-fly starts from NZ$795 (4.5 h). Both prices as Viator returned them on 18 September 2026.
How much does food cost in Queenstown?
