What to do in April
- Arrowtown by bus. Route 2 or Route 4 for $2.50; the Chinese Settlement, the Arrow River and the Lakes District Museum ($14 adult).
- The last Great Walk of the season. Book a late-April Routeburn before the wardens leave and the bridges come out.
- Lake Hayes loop. 8 km, 2 to 3 hours on foot, and the reflections are the point in April; Route 2 stops at Mora Wines and Amisfield Winery, about 550 m from the trail.
- Pack for both seasons. Warm mornings in town, frost on the tops; the summit tracks are still open but cold.
