What to do in August
- Ski the best snow. August carries the deepest cover on average; the ski fields guide has the buses and passes.
- Town is yours. Restaurants and beds without July's queues; the lakefront in winter light.
- Arrowtown in the frost. Route 2 or 4 for $2.50; the museum and the Chinese Settlement are at their most atmospheric.
- Wanaka day. Over the Crown Range on a clear day with chains in the boot, or SkyDrive's shuttle via Cardrona.
