What to do in May
- Indoors. The rainy-day list: Lakes District Museum, Kiwi Park, the hot pools, the library and the cinema, each with its bus.
- Low walks. Queenstown Hill, the Frankton Track and Bob's Cove stay good; leave Ben Lomond for a clear, frost-free day.
- Book next summer. The Great Walks release is in May; if you want a February Routeburn, this is when it is decided.
- Value. The quietest month means the best rates on beds and rental cars; carry chains if you drive the Crown Range.

Is May a good time to visit Queenstown?
It is the cheapest and quietest month. The trade is short days, the ski fields not yet open and the summit tracks in winter condition. Good for hot pools, Arrowtown, the museum and value; poor for big outdoor plans.
Can you ski in Queenstown in May?
Only just, and only at Coronet Peak's Snow Factory early opening, which ran 29 May to 12 June in 2026 with limited terrain. The main season starts in mid June.
When do Great Walks bookings open?
In May for the following season: in 2026 the Greenstone and Caples opened 13 May, the Kepler 15 May, the Routeburn 22 May and the Milford 28 May. The Milford and Routeburn can sell out on the day for peak dates.
