The ski fields close one by one (in 2026 Coronet Peak on 4 October, The Remarkables on 11 October, Cardrona on 18 October), the trails reopen, prices dip before summer.

In short: October is the changeover: a mean of 9.9 C, 62 mm of rain and 197 sunshine hours, with the ski fields closing through the month (in 2026 Coronet Peak on 4 October, The Remarkables on 11 October and Cardrona on 18 October; 2027 dates are usually announced in April). The summit tracks come out of the snow through the month, the Great Walks and the Glenorchy track bus restart on 1 November, and beds and cars are at shoulder-season rates. Labour Weekend at the end of the month is the one busy patch.

What to do in October
- Last turns. Cardrona ran latest in 2026, to 18 October, at spring prices; the Cardrona bus was $20 return in spring 2026.
- First summits. Ben Lomond usually clears through October; Queenstown Hill and the Queenstown Trail are already dry.
- Glenorchy before the buses. Rental car or tour until the track bus returns on 1 November; the Glenorchy guide has the options.
- Plan Christmas. October is the research window for the summer peak; book beds first, the Milford day second.

Often, late in the month, but the upper track holds snow and ice into November in many years. Check the DOC alerts and go on a clear day with proper footwear; Queenstown Hill is the reliable alternative.
