Summer arrives, and so does everyone else from the 20th. The numbers, the two events that matter, and how to enjoy the peak without a car.

In short: December averages 14.3 C, 60 mm of rain and 213 sunshine hours (NIWA 1991 to 2020). The first three weeks are the last quiet stretch of the year; from about 20 December the town fills for the Christmas fortnight, and the council’s free New Year’s Eve fireworks go off at midnight on the lakefront. Book early, ride the $2.50 bus.

- Come early in the month if you can choose: same weather, open tracks, beds available, and the Glenorchy and Milford roads at their best.

The council's free New Year's Eve celebration on the lakefront, with entertainment from the afternoon and the fireworks at midnight on 31 December, is the fixture. Queenstown's summer event programme is published closer to the date, so check the events calendar before you book around anything else.
Can you get around Queenstown without a car in December?
Yes, and in the peak fortnight it is easier than driving: every Orbus route is $2.50 with a Bee Card, Route 1 links the airport, Frankton and town roughly every 15 minutes, and on New Year's Eve 2025 the council closed a number of roads near the lakefront event. Council-managed parking in Queenstown is free from 6pm to 8am and on public holidays.
Is December a good time to walk the tracks?
Yes. The Great Walks season is open, the summit tracks are usually clear of snow by mid December, and the long evenings suit Queenstown Hill or the Frankton Track after dinner. Carry water and sun protection; the Twin Rivers and Countryside sections of the Queenstown Trail are exposed.
