Schools are back, so the Christmas crowd has gone, but it is still peak season with Waitangi Day (6 February) a busy long weekend. Summer overflow parking ends on 8 February. The best month for the long walks and the lake.

What to do in February
- The long walks. Ben Lomond, the Routeburn and the Queenstown Trail's Arrowtown-to-Gibbston day are all at their most reliable in February.
- The lake. Swim early, kayak or paddleboard from the bays; evenings are still light past 8:30pm.
- Gibbston. Arrow River Bridges Trail to the bungy bridge, Gibbston River Trail past the cellar doors; harvest is close.
- Getting around. Orbus at $2.50 with a Bee Card; the airport bus every 15 minutes or so.

Is February busy in Queenstown?
Busy but past the peak. The Christmas to New Year fortnight and the first week of January are the crush; by February schools are back on both sides of the Tasman and beds are easier to find, except over Waitangi weekend.
Is February a good month for the Routeburn or Milford Track?
Yes, one of the two best (with March): settled weather, long days, wardens on the huts and all bridges in. Bookings for popular February dates go early in the May release, so check DOC for cancellations.
Can you ski in Queenstown in February?
No. The four ski fields run June to October; February is lake, trail and mountain-bike season.
